Hypothetically speaking you make a mistake or do something wrong... What’s the first thing that comes to mind?? Do you own it, take responsibility or make an excuse also commonly known as a reason for the stuff up?
Growing up I was told that when in conversation, something is not to the persons liking, they start with a reason that sounds good and then there’s the real reason underneath. So why not give it to people straight..... Will you be deemed blunt, rude, or as a person of integrity, and someone they can trust?
What is a white lie? When is gray not clear enough? These are questions that play on my mind from time to time. I have made a commitment here on this website and have not stuck to it........ So do I give you reasons and excuses as to why I have not stuck to my commitment or do I just say. “I owe you an apology I have not stuck to my commitment, and will work to improve this in the future!”
So what is the difference to the outcome? Well with an excuse you may feel let down, and maybe even blamed in some cases. On the other hand when I own it, I feel responsible and motivated to take action to change it moving forward. I also have a bigger chance of learning the lesson in what took place.
